Kevin has been a film cinematographer and photographer since 1977. He became a director/dp in 1980 and started directing commercials, music videos, documentaries, TV programming, and short films by 1984. Kevin has worked on numerous films and he worked as a DP on "Wrestling with God" Jerry Jackson who was a writer for Sidney Pollack. The film went on to win a lot of awards including cinematography and 3 Cine Gold Eagle awards. By the end of 1991 he had won 157 awards in film making, most of them in cinematography, and a few in directing, editing and overall production. Awards included, Regional Emmy's, National, Telly's, New York Film Festivals, Chicago Film Festivals, Houston Film Festivals, LA Film Festival, Matrix, Cine Gold Eagle and many others. Behind The Scenes of Photographic Production

When I studied photography in the early 70's I used the zone system by Minor White. I still use the zone system today. It helps me determine the shades and zones of an image when shooting and what I can do with it in photoshop. It depends on where your highlights and shadows fall in your exposure and how you can manipulate them in post. It takes a few tests to determine your own personal camera.

Things have changed with digital photography. No negative to develop and print and you see your image instantly! But no mater if it's film or digital its the creative way of using the camera and how you pre-visulize the image. What can you do to make it better. If you have the time and the equipment, use it to it's full creative potential!

This is not about the RED camera but I do like using it. The main thing is to be creative, and no matter which camera you use, I always look at it as a tool. All cameras are different and in that they are different tools. So we all tend to have favorite tools. We need to always remember it's how you use that tool!

The RED camera is easy to mount on a crane or just about anything with it's rail system. Pretty much anything you can do with an Arriflex you can do with the RED (mounting, and movement) except shoot film.

Now we have HD and the RED camera. Most of my work in the past was 35mm and mainly on Arriflex cameras. When HD came along the cameras were so different to use and not physically the same. Then came the RED One, and it's like a 35mm camera. You have to build it like an arriflex, change lenses (35mm) and like most film productions you need an assistant to help use the camera. A credit to my friend AC/DIT Simon Manses who has worked with me for more than 25 years.

Shooting 35mm film has always been by favorite and most of my background. I believe lighting is the most important part of film making. "because without light, there is no image" Now we need to be creative with lighting.

Shooting Food Tabletop!

It's actually not a black tabletop, it's a mirror
with a black backdrop reflecting in the mirror.

Fairly simple setup, and they taste as good as

they look!

Lighting and shooting a setup like above with the strawberry
is a lot easier than the mirror but has its own tricks too look
worth eating.

Great Stylists, Lighting, and camera angles.

Using a mirror as a backdrop is awesome for many items

and extremely hard to do. But challenging not to see reflections.

Obviously you need a food stylist
and then you need to be creative with the
lighting!

To some people its like watching paint dry!
To others like me its a lot of fun and a challenge
In the studio with lights, flags, silks, mirrors, and
all kinds of tricks and toys to make food look good!

Auto shooting sheet metal

Shooting cars!

Working with shiny boards, silks, and couple of 4k HMI's was an easy way to light this Porsche. Generally I would use strobes, but I was shooting a TV commercial for Porsche and the digital photography was secondary.

The long stretch of the speedway was very impressive and working with this custom corvette was awesome. Having a beautiful model there was an added plus.

Miami Homestead Speedway is an excellent backdrop for and motor vehicle, especially at sunset! 4 strobe lights run by generator.

A black custom Hummer needed some lighting attention! Sunset mixed with 3 strobes and the proper placement of the vehicle against the graffiti background.

Shooting a custom Dodge Hemi with a special look in the Florida Everglades. Evening light always works with shiny sheet metal.

Shooting sheet metal, autos, cycles, sports cars and racing boats is a art in itself. Photographers that shoot this type of production understand lighting in a special way. If you or your company needs this lighting in a special way for your next production.

Shooting an advertising Campaign for Playtoys Inc. with hot models and fast cars and bikes. Yes it is a lot of fun! But the fun starts after your done shooting. we arrive on location with bikes or autos, models and car/bike prep crew, assistants, lighting, and client with only an hour and a half of sunlight to shoot. Magic Hour! It's the most beautiful time of day for any photographer. You have very little time and you need to supplement the lighting to make it all work. Yes I did a scout and prep but still there is not much time and you hope none of the lights fail or battery runs dead, the generator is still working. And then it's over in a flash! and your packing up in the dark! The client is happy and you have a lot of downloading and retouching to do.

Lighting is the key to everything photographic. Time of day, where to place the lights and output control of the lights is also important. If I can use the sunlight I do, if not we add another light to make it look just right

Shooting on a super speedway was awesome to say the least. It made a great backdrop for Playtoys Inc.

The owner of Playtoys Inc. is photographic himself and so we used him in many of the productions as a model.

Playtoys Inc. custom parts for motorcycles and autos are mostly chrome or black. Shooting them is a challenge in lighting and makes a fun time in the studio.

In the studio with models and bikes, Playtoys Inc. wanted to capture their logo with a little sex appeal.

The first of the 5 productions for Playtoys Inc. was to introduce their new line of accessories for motorcycles. A custom built bike with 2 of Miami's finest models were used on location to show off the new products.

Playtoys Inc. was looking for the rough graffiti look in their advertising and found a location under interstate 595 in a rail yard. Using 3 strobes and 1/2 hr. before sunset Kevin captured the images.
